With the Winter Olympics under way in Vancouver, the World Wildlife Fund is claiming that environmental concerns are going unheeded in the push to prepare Sochi to host the next Winter Games in 2014.
 
Whilst acknowledging an increase in the levels of public participation  in the preparations for the event, the WWF (Russia) said that nature reserves’ borders had been changed, access for nongovernmental groups had been curbed, and calls for closer monitoring of the environmental impact had gone unheeded.
 

I am very pleased to announce the publication of my book Putin's Legacy: Russian Policy and the New Arms Race. Based on three years research, the book is intended as a critical, but hopefully optimistic, assessment of the current state of the Russian polity, and in particular that country's relationships with the rest of the world.

PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA DMITRY MEDVEDEV: My name is Dmitry Medvedev. I want to start by apologising for the delay. I hope the wait was not too tedious. The delay was not due to my being too busy, but was caused by the summit underway today and tomorrow in Pittsburgh. It was a circumstance beyond my control. 

Gary Cartwright is a political scientist specialising in Energy and Environmental policy. He has extensive experience of working within the EU institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg in a number of policy areas. His main interest is in EU - Russia relations; he is a keen advocate of a common European energy policy, based on legal instruments and inclusive of peripheral states, and has been widely published on this issue.
