Lukashenko to Recognise the Breakaway Georgian Republics?

Life in the European Parliament often throws up some amusing surprises, but never more so than during a reception for the Polish-Belarusian community a little while ago.

The then president of the parliament, Hans-Gert Pottering, gave a speech during which he announced his optimism for the future of Belarusian democracy. "I look forward to the day" he said, "when president Lukashenko stands beside me in this great institution". The jaws of my Belarusian friends dropped in amazement at this stupid - and somewhat offensive - comment. Some of them had not stayed for Pottering's speech, as they fled earlier when they realised that one of the specially invited Belarusian guests was the head of KGB (as it is still known in that country), and that he was spotting faces.

I wonder how Pottering would react to the news that Lukashenko has announced that he will follow the Kremlin's lead, and will recognise the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia?

Europe's last Stalinist dictator has been reluctant to support Moscow on this, not only because he is actively seeking western largesse, but because he has a price: Moscow, however, does not want to pay for that which it assumes to be it's own by right. However, to date only Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and the tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru, famed for its money-laundering activities, have recognised the sovereign status of the two breakaway Georgian republics.

The EU is unlikely to ever recognise the two republics, and for Belarus to do so may be problematic in the future. The EU is keen to embrace Belarus, but cannot do so whilst Lukashenko is in office, despite what Pottering may think.

It would be extremely sad if the legacy of this despotic lunatic were to be a political decision that costs his long-suffering people dearly for generations to come.

Lukashenko

In Belorus we have waited a long time to be rid of this man and his gang of cohorts. Lukashenko shames us, and he holds our nation back. Please keep telling everybody in the rest of Europe what is going on here.
